Essential Virunga: Mountain Gorillas And Climbing The Nyiragongo Volcano

Virunga National park is without a doubt one of the most impressive and unique parks in the world and an encounter with the mountain gorillas is a very magical experience and should definitely be on your bucket list.

The Kivu Region where Virguna is located is a true paradise when it comes to nature and scenic views, but the region has also been hard hit by the effects of war and armed conflicts for more than two decades. Virunga is currently protected by a dedicated team of 689 Rangers. These men and women get intensive training, and they risk their lives every day to protect the park’s exceptional wildlife, including the last of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas.

Besides conservation, the park is also committed to supporting local communities. Virunga has a vision to responsibly use the park’s natural resources and aims to create job opportunities for the four million people who live in and around the park.

Our team has developed a fantastic program in which we start by climbing the Nyiragongo volcano, where we can see the largest lava lake in the world. The climb is not easy (but you don’t have to be an experienced hiker), but you will be treated to one of the most impressive spectacles in the world. At night you’ll get to look over the huge lava lake, a memorable experience. After the climb we will stay in a beautiful tented lodge with supreme views over the surroundings. The lodge will be our base to meet the mountain gorillas. We will end our adventure in style with two nights on a beautiful small island in Lake Kivu, where you can enjoy the wonderful silence and the beauty of nature. You won’t be disappointed with the food either, as Eastern Congo produces very tasty vegetables, fruit, cheese and meat and all the chefs do a fantastic job. For this program we start from Goma. You can fly to Kigali from where we will arrange a comfortable car to take you to Goma or you can fly from Kenya.

Day 1 and 2: Nyiragongo Volcano

We will leave by car to the starting point for the ascent of the volcano. You will receive a backpack with all the necessary material for your hike. The climb takes around eight hours and you don’t have to be an experienced hiker. However, do not underestimate the tour and be careful where you put your feet as the lava rocks are treacherous to twist your ankle.

In the evening we will stay in a very simple hut on the edge of the volcano. At night you will be treated to a beautiful spectacle above the largest lava lake in the world. It gets cold so bring a warm sweater, jacket, hat, scarf, gloves, etc. The next day we will descend and head towards the lodge. The drive is really scenic and you’ll have plenty of photo opportunities passing the green fertile hills and picturesque villages. At the lodge you will stay in true glamping style in a sturdy tent with nice furniture and a fantastic view over the region. You will feast on the delicious meals prepared in the lodge, made with fresh ingredients from the region. Be sure to try the kivu cheese too!

Day 3: Gorilla Tracking

Today we’ll get to meet the famous mountain gorillas. The gorillas are being tracked by trackers with whom we are in radio contact.  To come face to face with these giants is an unforgivable event. The little ones are adorable as they play or cuddle with mommy. The dominant silverback towers above everyone else and is an impressive presence. The gorillas can come very close to you, but as long as you remain calm there is no danger. Overnight at the lodge. (Don’t forget to wear your mouth mask when visiting the gorilla)

Day 4 and 5: Tchegera Island

After breakfast we go towards the legendary Lake Kivu to stay on the idyllic Tchegera Island which was created by an extinct volcano in the lake. The island is ideal for a few relaxing days after the intens climb and the many steps to look for the gorillas. You will stay there in true glamping style with meals on the beach next to the campfire. The island is not too big, but ideal for short walks or kayaking.

Day 6: Goma

We have another beautiful lodge for you in Goma where you can enjoy the lake. Try the delicious fish or steak and in the afternoon you can also explore the city. If desired, you can take an additional city tour.

Day 7: Departure

Today it is time to leave. We bring you to the airport or if you wish we can also arrange transport to Kigali.

Why choose Congo Voyages for this tour?

We are the only local agency with people who are actually on site, and apart from a “lost Belgian expat”, our team consists entirely of Congolese with years of experience in the field. We work closely with the authorities such as the Ministry of Tourism, ICCN, but also the military who help us to secure sensitive areas. Our tours will only take place if all safety conditions have been met and the necessary permissions have been granted and if we have been given the green light from the local authorities/chiefs if necessary.

Beware of (fake) travel agents who copy our itineraries and offer our tours for a lower price. Most of them are Ugandan, Rwandan and Spanish operators who have never been to Congo and recruit locals without knowledge of the field or a license on the internet to do their travels, often with disastrous results, with people being arrested or defrauded and put in jail. worst case no one even shows up.
